Route 51 Learning Institute
What is the Route 51 Learning Institute?
Route 51 Learning Institute is a facility designed to accommodate students from 15 to 21 years of age. This outreach school offers an alternative setting to daily high school programming. It is a centre where students can enrol in, and complete, high school credit courses.
What courses does Route 51 Learning Institute offer?
We offer Alberta Distance Learning courses in all academic subjects for grades 10 to 12, as well as CTS courses and Work Experience programs. Courses are available in print or online formats. Students can come in to the school to work on assignments and/or take additional course assignments home with them.
We offer Wellness programming the form of CTS modules and healthy food daily.
Why choose Route 51 Learning Institute?
- Relaxed atmosphere
- Smaller student-teacher ratio
- Smaller space, not as many people
- Flexible attendance
- Focus on one course at a time
- Credits in work experience
- Snacks!
Route 51 is right for you if…
- You want to graduate
- You want to upgrade a class
- You are an independent learner
- You are able to set deadlines and complete tasks on time
- You need flexibility in your schedule
- You are in the middle of a semester and fitting into regular high school programming won’t work for you
What is required?
Students need to be self-motivated learners, and able to read and write at grade level.
What else do I need to know?
- Students need to contact Guidance/Counselors at Ecole Sir John Franklin Highschool for pre-assessment before meeting with the outreach teacher at Route 51 to register. If a student is already registered at a high school other than Ecole Sir John Franklin High School, discussions will include the counselors at that school.
- A five-credit course takes approximately six weeks to complete.
- There are teachers present for tutoring, course assistance, and various other supports.
- Students will earn regular high school credits for their completed courses and will be working towards earning a regular NWT high school diploma.
What are the hours?
Route 51 is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Monday through Thursday, and 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Fridays. Students may choose to work on their course work within the noted hours of operation.
Route 51 is currently using the same school calender as the YK1 District.
