As Assistant Superintendent of Schools for YK1, Mel is responsible for Human Resources and Technology. In addition, he oversees program development and curriculum implementation for all levels of education, from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Mel and his wife have spent over 20 years in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Throughout this time he has always worked in the education sector, in a variety of roles. Specializing in English Language Arts and Mathematics at the secondary level, Mel's background includes teaching all subjects to all levels, from Grade 1- 12.

Prior to his current position as Assistant Superintendent for YK1, Mel's work experience included being a teacher in a number of northern communities, a principal in four different schools, a supervisor of schools, and a coordinator at the Department of Education, Culture and Employment.
