Staff Spotlight - Beaton Mackenzie

Beaton Mackenzie - Ecole Sir John Franklin High School

Few members of the YK1 staff have had the longevity of Beaton Mackenzie. He began his career in the North back in the 1980s working with students at Sir John Franklin Territorial High School who were living at Akaitcho Hall. In the over 40 years since, he has taught physical education at a variety of YK1 schools, including Mildred Hall School, N.J. Macpherson School, Ecole William McDonald Middle School and Ecole J.H. Sissons. For the last 15 years, he has been a member of the student services team at Ecole Sir John Franklin High School providing critical support for special needs students. Often working in one-on-one situations, Beaton is known for imparting very practical work and social skills to his students. He draws on his experiences as a father and as a 40-year education veteran to build student relationships based on mutual respect, optimism and a healthy dose of straight talk. After a career that has spanned parts of five different decades, Beaton has decided that 2020-2021 will be his final year. We wish him the best in his retirement.
