On Friday, we had a special visit from the Yellowknife Airport's firefighters. They brought their newest engine (pictured above) to the school during the afternoon recess for the students to see. The firefighters left ballots allowing students to suggest a name for the engine. Teachers will be provided with forms to distribute to the students. All replies are due back to their classroom teachers no later than November 8th. This will allow us time to get the suggestions back to the firefighters.
This week promises to be a busy one for our students and school staff. Here is what we have on the calendar for this week:
- Monday, October 31st - Halloween - Students are most welcome to wear their costumes at school. After the morning recess, we will have an assembly in the gym and a costume parade where students will be invited to participate in class groups. Individual classroom teachers may also have additional expectations about the timing for wearing costumes in class which they will share with their own families. We do ask that students' costumes not include any real or simulated weapons. Also, we ask that costumes not be too scary for the benefit of all students, but particularly our younger ones. Costumes must also be appropriate for an elementary school. Finally, students are allowed to bring masks. They may be allowed to wear them in class (at the teachers' discretion) and during the costume parade. However masks cannot be worn in the halls or while outside for our recess breaks. We appreciate you taking a few minutes to review these expectations with your children to help ensure that everyone has a safe and fun Halloween, our very first at École Įtl’ǫ̀!
- On Wednesday, November 2nd, the whole school is attending a series of short plays at the NACC (at Sir John Franklin). The individual shows presented will be The Paper Bag Princess, Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, The Zax, Where the Wild Things Are. The cost of admission is $5. If you haven't yet sent it in, there is still time to have your child bring it to their teacher. If you would like to make alternate arrangements for having your child attend, please reach out to their teacher, or to the school's administration (at itlo@yk1.nt.ca). Students will leave the school and walk in time for the start of the performance at 9:30 AM. Please check the weather in the morning and make sure your child dresses appropriately for the conditions. We expect that all classes will be back to the school by the start of the lunch hour.
- Friday November 4th is a non-instructional day. There will be no school for students. The day is set aside so that teachers can work on report cards (coming out at the end of November)
On the horizon...
- We will have our school's Remembrance Day assembly at 10:45 on November 9th. Teachers will share details with parents via their class newsletters.
- The next Subway Lunch is November 10th. Please have your orders in by 6 PM on Monday November 7th. If you need to set yourself up with an account to order Subway, you will be asked for a code. The word is SUBWAY.
- There is no school on Friday, November 11th due to Remembrance Day.
