newsletter

This past Thursday, we celebrated world read-aloud day with a school-wide story, followed by having guest readers visit each class within the school. Both readers and students enjoyed themselves a great deal! We have only two news items and reminders for you this week. Here is the news for the coming week:

  • Subway day is on Thursday, February 9th. Please remember to place your orders no later than 6 PM on Monday February 6th.
  • The next meeting of our school PAC is on Wednesday, February 8th at 7:00 PM. We meet in the school's staff room, but we also have a link to allow families to attend virtually. To connect online, please visit https://meet.google.com/ybv-ecjw-gth
  • Please remember that Monday, February 13th is a non-instructional day. There will be no school for students on that day.

Calls for Parent Volunteers

Lighting the Stove in the Wall Tent

We are looking for parents to be "on call" to light a fire in the walltent in the mornings so that teachers can use it! Please email wendylahey@gmail.com to indicate which days of the week you could be on call for to light a fire in the morning. On days where the tent will be used on afternoons only, there may also be opportunities to help us out by coming in to light the stove at mid-day. Thank you very much for your help with this!

School Breakfast Program

In early February, we hope to start offering our morning breakfast program to our students. The program will be open to anyone who wants to come in for a bite to eat before getting on with the school day (if there is a lot of demand, then we will ask students to clean up and head outside so that others can come in and have some breakfast).

In order to make this program a success, we need parent volunteers for the following tasks:

  • Parent volunteer coordinator - Arranges volunteer schedules, and generally makes sure the program runs smoothly. The coordinator is also the primary point of contact between the school staff, the PAC, and the volunteers themselves.
  • Supply and ingredient upkeep - This volunteer (or volunteers) coordinate the weekly order of groceries with the school's staff, and also arrange for pick-up, delivery, and stocking of supplies. The order itself will be placed and paid for by the school staff but we need someone to make sure we have enough food every week.
  • Breakfast Volunteers - We are hoping that there will be two volunteers each morning (this can be on a rotating schedule). We would like someone to come in from 7:30 to 8:30 to get things set up and be there for the first part of the morning. Ideally, a second volunteer would come from 7:45 to 8:45 and take care of clean up (we have dishwashers!!!). The food on offer will be healthy, self-serve or individually-packaged items. These volunteers are there to make sure the food is available, but food prep is not part of this task.

We are working closely with our PAC on this initiative. We ask any potential volunteers be connected to our school community (parents or extended family members such as grandparents). If you would like to know more about the program, or you would like to be one of our volunteers, we ask that you email our PAC directly at itlopac@gmail.com.
