Thank you for checking in for the school's news of the week. We are sending our update out one day early this week, and expect to resume our regular schedule with our next posting on December 8th. Here is what we have in our news this week...

New This Week

School Weather Station

In last week's posting, we announced that our school weather station has come online. Since then we have finished setting it up. That means that anyone interested in the local conditions at the school can get real-time weather information. In order to access the data on a web page or personal device, users will need to sign up for an account at weatherlink.com. The account is free. Our local weather information is meant to support our local outdoor programming. Students can also access real-time data to undertake inquiry projects around weather and climate change.

Winter Concert

Our Winter Concert this year is being presented by the students in the Grades 3 through 5 classes. There are a variety of perfomances that are sure to entertain our guests. Our JK through 2 students will create the decorations to add to the festive atmosphere. It will then be their turn to perform in the Spring, with the older students providing the decorations for the younger students' concert. No date for the Spring Concert has been set yet. The Winter Concert is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM on Thursday, December 14th. The doors will open at 6:00. We hope to see you there.

YWCA NWT Sponsor a Family

As the holiday season approaches, École Įtł’ǫ̀ will be taking part in an initiative to support families in need in our community. Each year, the NWT YWCA runs a Family Sponsorship program that helps to make the holiday season brighter by alleviating some stress for families on fixed or low incomes. Here is a link to their website if you'd like to learn more: Sponsor A Family YWCA NWT.

École Įtł’ǫ̀ is supporthing three local families. If they haven't done so already, classroom teachers will be sending out additional information to you. Your support for our community's families will be very much appreciated.

Subway Day

Our next Subway Day is scheduled for Thursday, December 7th. Families wishing to order a sandwich for their child can do so online. The deadline for placing an order is Monday, December 4th at 6:00 PM.

Crosswalk Use

Now that the snow is here, many of our crosswalks' pavement markings are hidden. However, they are still essential to making sure everyone is able to transition from the school grounds to the parking areas safely. Lately we have noticed a few of our visitors (and one or two students) crossing at areas outside of the designated crosswalks. We would like to remind everyone to respect the crosswalk signs, and to cross at designated areas. This helps our supervisors make sure everyone is safe, but also helps to teacher our students street safety. Thank you very much for your help with this.

Reminders

Dress for the Conditions

This week, we have had a few cold days and we expect the weather will eventually turn colder. Please remember that our students go outside for the morning and afternoon recesses, as well as at lunchtime. It is important to make sure everyone is dressed for the conditions. It's a great idea to check the forecast to make sure everyone is ready for the day.

Dene Law of the Month: Share what you have

This year, we are highlighting a Dene Law each month. This month, the law we are emphasizing is 'Share what you have'. Students are encouraged to nominate others they see living and respecting the law by entering those students' names into a draw. At our next assembly, we will celebrate Share what you have one more time, conduct a draw with two names chosen at random from each class. Afterward, we will introduce the next Dene Law for the remainder of the month.

Breakfast Program - Volunteers Needed!

The Ecole Itlo Breakfast Program is looking for volunteers! Breakfast is offered every morning to all students in the school kitchen. Parent volunteers are needed every morning from 7:45-8:45 am to set up, serve, and clean up after breakfast. It is a lovely way to get to know the school community.

All volunteers must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check. If your most recent check is over a year old, you will need to renew it. If this is the case, please contact the front office and Mme Laura can draft a letter for you to take to the RCMP to get the check completed.

If you are able to help out, please indicate your availability on this sign up sheet, which also has a link with more information about how the program runs. You can email the Parent Advisory Council (itlopac@gmail.com) with any questions. As well, please consider joining our Facebook group (Ecole Itlo PAC) to stay updated about upcoming school and PAC events.
