Thank you for checking back with our site to get the latest school news. We are looking forward to tonight's Rainbow Family Fun Night. Please see below for further details about the evening. Also, we remind everyone that Friday February 2 is a professional development day, and there are no classes for students. Here is what we have in other school news...

New This Week

Subway Day

Our next Subway Day is Thursday January 25th. If you would like to place an order on behalf of your child, please do so using this link. Orders must be submitted no later than 6:00 PM on Monday, January 22nd.

Grade 1 Rabbit Camp

Our Grade 1 students are heading out on the land to participate in the Rabbit Camp, scheduled for January 29th. Please make sure that children are dressed appropriately for the conditions. In the case of extreme cold, the event would be postponed. However, at more moderate temperatures (for Yellowknife and the NWT), students will be heading out. The Grade 1 teachers will be sure to pass on detailed information to families.

Clubs and Gym Activities

We have resumed some of our lunchtime clubs and started gym activities. The clubs will continue through to the end of the year. Lunchtime gym activities will happen every day until at least Spring Break. We have the following clubs running at the moment: Rainbow (every other week), Fantasy and Board Games (every Tuesday), and Chess (every Friday). The gym is open for all students in a particular grade to participate in organized physical activity. For example this Monday it will be the turn of our Grade 1 students, while on Tuesday it will be the turn for the Grade 2s, with each grade having their turn. Once all grade levels have tone through, we return to the JKs and go trough the rotation again. Thank you to our staff volunteers who make these opportunities happen for our students!

Reminders

Rainbow Family Fun Night - Tonight (January 19th) at 6:00 PM

Our school has the honour of hosting YK1's first Rainbow Family Night. Our grade 4/5 Rainbow Club has planned an evening or art and board games on Friday, January 19th between 6-8pm in our school gym. There will also be a bake sale to raise funds for our school's Rainbow Clubs. Invitations have been sent to the other YK1 schools and everyone is welcome. We hope to see many of you from the YK1 community on Friday evening! Thanks to Mme Ashley and the Rainbow Club students for their work in organizing the district's first Family Fun Night!

Annual Book Exchange!

In celebration of family literacy day, we will once again be hosting our school book exchange.  Students are invited to bring the books they would like to  exchange to school from January 22 to 24th. For every book they donate, they will receive a coupon. Our librarian will sort and organize the books. Beginning on January, 25th and 26th, classes will go to the library to exchange their coupons for donated books. Please make sure the books your child donates match their reading level (ie: picture books vs novels). This will help make sure that there are enough books at appropriate levels for all of our students.

Happy reading!

Thank You For Making A Difference

The Northwest Territories Teachers' Association is running its annual ‘Thank You For Making A Difference’ campaign. This is an opportunity to nominate someone at the school who has made a difference. Students, parents and community members are welcome to recognize someone. To do so, please fill out the form provided (English version) (French version) and thank someone who has made a difference for them. All forms are then entered into a draw that happens at the end of the month.

West Coast Seeds Sale Fundraiser

Our West Coast Seeds fundraiser application has been approved! The fundraiser sale will be from 3 Jan 2024 - 3 Feb 2024 with 40% of all sales going to our school’s PAC! This year there will be a larger selection of seeds to choose from. Please use the link below to order.

Website: https://fundraising.westcoastseeds.com/collections/all

All orders will be shipped in bulk at the end of the sale for organization. Once that has taken place, we post additional information to our website on the distribution of your individual orders. This is a great way to get ready for the new gardening season while also supporting our school!

Breakfast Program - Volunteers Needed!

The Ecole Itlo Breakfast Program is looking for volunteers! Breakfast is offered every morning to all students in the school kitchen. Parent volunteers are needed every morning from 7:45-8:45 am to set up, serve, and clean up after breakfast. It is a lovely way to get to know the school community.

All volunteers must complete a Vulnerable Sector Check. If your most recent check is over a year old, you will need to renew it. If this is the case, please contact the front office and Mme Laura can draft a letter for you to take to the RCMP to get the check completed.

If you are able to help out, please indicate your availability on this sign up sheet, which also has a link with more information about how the program runs. You can email the Parent Advisory Council (itlopac@gmail.com) with any questions. As well, please consider joining our Facebook group (Ecole Itlo PAC) to stay updated about upcoming school and PAC events.
