My name is Brendan Callas and this is my third year teaching the Birchbark Discovery Centre here at Mildred Hall School. We are in the third year of a pilot program, providing students with self-directed learning opportunities through a place-conscious lens. I was born and raised here in Yellowknife, attending Mildred Hall School and Sir John Franklin High School as a kid. I completed my Bachelor of Education degree in 2013 at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario. I live in Yellowknife now with my wife, our daughter, and our golden doodle puppy named "Lego". I love camping, canoeing, basketball, hot chocolate, and the North. I'm looking forward to continuing this path of alternative education and providing students with meaningful, authentic, learning experiences.
